Swift’s blockchain-based ledger ran its first live tokenised deposit cross-border transfer, with Standard Chartered and HSBC proving bank-to-bank interoperability.
Standard Chartered and HSBC say they have executed the first live tokenised deposit transaction on Swift’s blockchain-based ledger. Tokenised deposits are regular bank deposits represented as digital tokens, like a “digital receipt” issued by a regulated bank, rather than a cryptocurrency.
The transaction worked by exchanging payment messages via SWIFT Networks. Swift’s ledger then acted as an orchestration layer, meaning it coordinated and verified what each bank owed the other.
Those obligations were recorded on both banks’ systems. HSBC recorded the obligation on its Tokenised Deposit Service (TDS). Standard Chartered recorded it on its own tokenised-deposit infrastructure.
Swift said the ledger enabled the obligations to be matched and netted before final settlement. Netting means offsetting what each side owes so only the remaining balance needs to settle, which can reduce the amount of money that must move at once.
The announcement follows Swift’s July 2026 update that its blockchain-based ledger was ready for initial use, with 17 banks preparing to pilot live transactions using tokenised deposits.
For African businesses and banks that rely on cross-border transfers, the main promise is always-on payments. That could help corporates move liquidity across regions outside banking hours and improve cash visibility, which is simply seeing balances and incoming funds faster.
Just as importantly, this approach keeps transactions in regulated bank money. It avoids some of the legal and operational questions that come with stablecoins or other digital assets.
The bigger test will be whether more banks join, and whether tokenised deposit rails can connect cleanly to existing payment systems in more markets without adding complexity or new settlement risk.
