PayJoy is acquiring select strategic assets of Finia AI to strengthen AI underwriting and expand credit products for underserved borrowers across its markets.
PayJoy said it has acquired select strategic assets of Finia AI. The company plans to fold Finia’s technology and know-how into the PayJoy platform.
Finia AI built AI-powered underwriting for micro-businesses. That matters because many small and informal businesses do not have the paperwork banks typically rely on, like audited statements or long credit histories. AI underwriting in this context usually means using software models to estimate risk from alternative signals, like transaction patterns or device and repayment behavior.
PayJoy said it has reached more than 20 million customers across nine countries in Latin America, Africa, and Asia. It offers products such as digitally secured smartphone financing, credit lines, and a card product. Digitally secured smartphone financing generally means the lender can remotely restrict a phone if repayments stop, which reduces default risk.
The two companies are also setting up a path for eligible Finia customers to apply for PayJoy loans and other financial services, subject to PayJoy approval.
For fintech lenders operating across Africa and other emerging markets, the hardest problem is often credit assessment, not payments. When formal credit bureau data is thin, lenders need better risk models to avoid high defaults while still approving more people.
If PayJoy can transfer Finia’s micro-business underwriting approach to African markets, it could widen access to credit for sole proprietors and informal merchants. These are segments that power a lot of local commerce but are often excluded from bank lending.
The deal also signals a broader trend, lenders are buying specialized AI and underwriting talent instead of building everything in-house. That can shorten product timelines, but it also raises the bar on model governance, meaning how lenders test, monitor, and explain automated credit decisions.
