NMB Bank will sponsor Kariakoo Festival 2026 with TZS 165 million, pushing QR and contactless payments and offering working-capital finance to traders.
NMB Bank has announced a TZS 165 million sponsorship for Kariakoo Festival 2026 in Dar es Salaam. The festival theme is “Bei Shwaa Shwaa” and it is built around discounts and promotions that bring buyers into Kariakoo.
The 2026 edition was launched on September 8 with a procession that started at Mnazi Mmoja and ended at Kariakoo Market. Kariakoo Market officials, the traders association, and event organisers attended.
At the festival, NMB says traders will be able to receive payments through NMB Lipa Namba and NMB Mkononi. “Lipa Namba” is a merchant payment number that customers use to pay digitally, similar to paying a bill to a business. NMB also plans to showcase NMB Tap, a contactless payment service, meaning customers can pay by tapping a device instead of using cash, including rings, wristbands, and payment stickers.
Beyond payments, the bank will market working-capital financing. Working capital is short-term money used to buy stock and run daily operations. NMB said eligible customers can access Mshiko Fasta digital loans through NMB Mkononi, up to TZS 2 million for individuals and TZS 5 million for businesses, depending on approved limits.
The bank also highlighted its NMB SME World Business Credit Card. It offers eligible businesses credit up to TZS 50 million, plus up to 53 interest-free days on qualifying transactions.
For Kariakoo traders, faster merchant payments can shorten queues during peak shopping days and reduce cash handling risk. Digital transactions also create records, which can help businesses track sales and support future loan applications.
For NMB, the festival is a high-traffic channel to grow adoption of QR-style payments and contactless tools. It also positions the bank closer to small businesses that need financing right before end-of-year stock clearing.
Kariakoo Market’s management said the festival also comes after reconstruction and improvements following a fire, making the event a chance to bring customers back and show the rebuilt market spaces.
