Tanzanian healthtech Medikea closed a $1.2 million pre-seed round and is opening two new clinics in Arusha and Morogoro, taking its network to four.
Medikea has raised $1.2 million in pre-seed funding. The Tanzanian healthtech startup is also opening two new clinics in Arusha and Morogoro, bringing its clinic network to four.
Medikea said the round included backing from Baobab Network, Catalyst Fund, and develoPPP Ventures. Madica invested $200,000. Impacc, Hustle Fund, O’Shaughnessy Ventures, Madiro, and one angel investor also joined the round.
Medikea said the new capital will be used for growth, product development, and new specialist services across its network. The company wants to serve more than 100,000 patients over the next 12 months. It also plans to grow from four clinics to 10 across Tanzania by the end of 2027.
Medikea runs a hybrid model, meaning it combines software and physical locations. Its app connects patients to doctors, and it builds its own network of clinics on the ground. It also runs its own pharmacies and diagnostic labs.
Medikea was founded in 2020 by Dr Elvis Silayo and Desirè Ruhinda, its former COO, who has since stepped away.
Medikea’s approach is to build the parts of care delivery it depends on, instead of only adding an app layer to existing providers.
Dr Elvis Silayo, co-founder and CEO, said, “If you layer technology on top of a broken system, you are digitising inefficiency.”
The company is operating in a large outpatient care market. Condia reported that Tanzania records about 60 million outpatient visits a year, with spending projected to reach $287.3 million by 2025 and a market volume of $392.9 million by 2029.
Catalyst Fund Partner Maxime Bayen said, “We saw an opportunity not just to digitise healthcare access but to build a more affordable, continuous and climate-resilient model of outpatient care.”
Madica said Medikea’s first clinic broke even within 12 months and serves about 1,000 patients monthly. Madica also said Medikea delivers care 25 times faster than public hospitals and 50% to 70% cheaper than traditional private care.
