In Short

  • Kora has joined IATAโ€™s Financial Gateway, a payments platform used by airlines and travel agencies.
  • The link is meant to simplify how airlines accept and settle payments across African markets.
  • Airlines can reach multiple payment methods through one integration.

What Happened: Kora Integration With IATA Financial Gateway

Kora has joined the International Air Transport Associationโ€™s IATA Financial Gateway, which helps airlines manage payments across countries.

IATA Financial Gateway is a payment orchestration platform, which is software that connects many payment options through one pipe. Instead of an airline building separate connections to different payment providers, it can use IFG to plug into approved partners.

With this integration, airlines and travel agencies on IFG can accept payments in Africa via Kora. That includes cards, bank transfers, mobile money, and local alternative payment methods.

Kora says the goal is to reduce the complexity airlines face when entering markets such as Nigeria, Kenya, Ghana, Egypt, and South Africa. Common issues include fragmented payment rails, foreign exchange complexity, and managing multiple payment service provider relationships.

Why It Matters: Faster Acceptance and More Reliable Settlements

Air travel demand in Africa is expected to keep rising, with projections of hundreds of millions of additional passengers by 2050. But payment acceptance can be a bottleneck for airlines selling tickets in African markets.

For airlines, a single IFG connection to Kora could improve payment acceptance rates, because customers can pay with familiar local methods. It may also reduce operational overhead, since airlines can avoid maintaining many direct integrations.

For the wider African fintech ecosystem, it is another example of payment infrastructure firms moving upmarket into enterprise use cases. Airline settlement and compliance requirements tend to be strict, so partnerships like this can signal that local payment rails are becoming easier for global companies to adopt.
