Kenya Power says 426 graduate engineers finished four months of training and will begin five-month regional field rotations to support grid modernisation.
Kenya Power said 426 engineers have completed the first phase of its Graduate Trainee Programme. The company said the group went through four months of intensive classroom learning at its Institute of Energy Studies and Research.
The trainees will now be deployed to a five-month regional field rotation programme. This is on-the-job training across different regions, so the engineers can apply what they learned in real operational settings.
Kenya Power’s managing director and CEO, Dr. Joseph Siror, told the trainees to keep learning and focus on service delivery. He said the engineers are expected to strengthen the utility’s technical capacity as it works toward its strategic goals.
Kenya Power said 328 of the 426 engineers are specialised in electrical engineering. The rest trained in geospatial, mechatronics, mechanical, civil engineering, and ICT.
This intake comes as Kenya Power’s customer base grows. The utility said it now serves 10.4 million customers, driven by rising electricity demand and continued electrification projects.
The company also tied the graduate programme to its grid modernisation and digitisation work. Grid digitisation typically means adding software systems, sensors, and data tools, similar to moving from manual checks to a monitored “dashboard” for the network.
For the wider ecosystem in Kenya, more engineers in areas like ICT and geospatial skills can help utilities execute projects faster. These skills are often needed for outage management, network mapping, and planning upgrades, which can directly affect reliability and customer experience.
