KCB Bank Kenya has signed an MoU with Kenya’s public universities to finance green campus upgrades. The focus is cleaner energy, lower running costs, and more climate resilience.
KCB Bank Kenya, part of KCB Bank, signed a Memorandum of Understanding, which is a formal agreement that sets out how parties will work together. The deal is aimed at helping public universities fund infrastructure projects that reduce energy and water bills.
KCB said the financing will support solar energy, energy efficiency, clean cooking technologies, waste management, biogas systems, solar water heating, and rainwater harvesting. Energy efficiency means using less power to do the same work, like switching to LED lighting and upgrading cooling systems.
Annastacia Kimtai, managing director of KCB Bank Kenya, said public universities are under pressure from tight budgets, rising operating costs, and major infrastructure needs. She added that access to appropriate financing is still a barrier for education institutions trying to shift to cleaner energy.
The MoU follows a separate agreement KCB previously signed with the State Department for Higher Education and Research. That earlier partnership also focused on practical steps to cut universities’ environmental footprint, improve resource use, and lower operating expenses.
Public universities in Kenya run large facilities, including lecture halls, labs, student housing, and kitchens. These operations can be expensive when power and water costs rise, and when backup generators are needed during outages.
If universities can finance solar power, biogas, and water harvesting, they can reduce recurring costs and redirect funds to teaching, research, and student services. For the wider market, the deal signals that Kenyan commercial banks are looking beyond traditional lending, and toward structured “green finance” for institutions with predictable long-term infrastructure needs.
It also creates demand for local suppliers and installers of solar, energy audit services, waste systems, and water management equipment. Over time, universities can become live testbeds for sustainability projects that students and startups can build around.
