Guinea has launched NimbaPay, its national instant payment system. The platform is meant to make digital transfers faster, safer, and interoperable across the country’s financial institutions.
NimbaPay launched in Guinea as a national payments rail, meaning shared infrastructure that moves money between institutions.
The Central Bank of the Republic of Guinea, also known as BCRG, led the project. The system was implemented by Guinéenne de Monétique, also known as GuiM.
NimbaPay supports instant payments that are secure and interoperable. Interoperable means a customer at one institution can send money to a customer at another institution, like sending a message across different mobile networks.
Participating institutions include banks, electronic money institutions, and microfinance institutions. Electronic money institutions are regulated providers that issue e-money wallets, similar to stored value in a mobile wallet.
The central bank governor, Dr. Karamo Kaba, described NimbaPay as “national and sovereign infrastructure” designed to carry everyday transactions for citizens and businesses.
The project received strategic and technical support from the AfricaNenda Foundation. It is built on the open-source software from the Mojaloop Foundation. Open-source means the core code is publicly available and can be audited and adapted, like a shared blueprint.
National instant payment systems are increasingly seen as digital public infrastructure across Africa. They can reduce friction in local transfers by connecting banks and wallets on one switch.
For consumers and small businesses, that usually means faster transfers and fewer failed payments across different providers. It can also lower transaction costs by standardising how participants connect.
For governments and regulators, NimbaPay creates a clearer foundation for expanding affordable digital financial services. It also sets up Guinea for more services on top, including better merchant payments, bill payments, and future cross-institution products, as more participants join the network.
