In Short

Google Play is putting $1 million behind African indie game studios.

Ten studios across 32 African countries will get equity-free funding, plus support.

Applications close July 31, and selected studios will be announced in September.

What Happened

Google Play, Googleโ€™s Android app marketplace, launched a $1 million Indie Games Fund for independent game studios in Africa.

The fund is equity-free, meaning studios get cash without giving up ownership shares. That matters in early-stage gaming, where founders often trade large chunks of equity to finance development.

Google Play will select 10 studios. Each studio will receive between $50,000 and $200,000.

Beyond capital, the programme includes technical support and mentorship from industry experts. This typically covers areas like product development, game performance, and publishing, which is the process of releasing and marketing a game to reach players.

Why It Matters

Google Playโ€™s fund targets a clear gap in African gaming finance. The African gaming market is estimated at $2.29 billion, but many studios still struggle to raise growth funding.

That mismatch shows up in industry data. Africa is home to about 250 game studios, yet only a small share have received government funding, and only a minority have joined accelerators or other support programmes.

For studios building mobile-first titles, distribution is often tied to app stores. Support from Google Play can help teams improve user acquisition, which is how games attract new players, and monetisation, which is how games earn revenue through ads or in-app purchases.

If the programme works, it could also make African studios more visible to global publishers and investors. That can shorten the path from local traction to international scale.
