AI, short for artificial intelligence, is software that finds patterns in data and makes predictions or recommendations, like a digital adviser for farming decisions. In agriculture, it can help forecast yields, flag disease risks, or suggest when to irrigate.
This edition is themed “From Ideation to Deployment”. That signals a shift from rewarding concepts to backing solutions that already work and can be used at scale. The organisers say many digital agriculture products do not progress beyond pilot projects, even when early results look strong.
The challenge is looking for solutions in five priority areas. These include precision agriculture and input optimisation, crop yield prediction, pest and disease surveillance, climate risk modelling, and water and natural resource management.
Selected tools also need to fit the realities of African farming. That means low connectivity, mobile-first use, multiple languages, and incomplete data. The programme also asks for “explainable” outputs, in simple terms, recommendations users can understand and act on, not a black box score.
Deployment will be concentrated in Rwanda, Kenya, Ghana, Malawi, and Uganda. Implementation will involve national ministries and FAO country offices, plus local agricultural stakeholders.
For startups and research teams in Agri Tech and AI & Analytics, this is a clearer route to government-linked rollout, which is often the hardest step after a pilot.
For governments and donors, the setup pushes interoperability with national agricultural information systems and digital extension platforms. That increases the odds that an AI tool becomes part of regular services, rather than a standalone app.
Eligibility requirements include being a legally registered entity or team, with at least two members who spend at least half their working time on the project. That narrows the field toward teams that can support a live deployment over time.
