Equity Bank has launched the EMMA digital wallet via Finserve. It works via app, USSD, and Equitel STK, targeting everyday payments in Kenya.
Equity Bank has launched EMMA, a new digital wallet built for everyday payments. The wallet is available through an Android app, USSD, and the Equitel SIM toolkit.
Equity Bank is rolling out EMMA as it responds to rising competition from neobanks, fintechs, and mobile money services in Kenya.
EMMA is being launched through Finserve Africa, Equity Group’s fintech arm. A digital wallet is an app-based account that stores money and lets people pay, transfer, and sometimes get other services, without needing a bank branch.
Customers can access EMMA in three ways. There is an Android app for smartphone users. There is also USSD, which is the short code menu many people use on feature phones, like dialing a code to check airtime. The third option is the Equitel STK, which is a menu built into the SIM card.
Equity already has several digital channels, including its Equity Mobile banking app, agency banking outlets, and bill payment rails. EMMA is not positioned as a replacement for those tools. It is meant to sit closer to where customers spend money daily, especially for peer-to-peer transfers and merchant payments.
This matters because banks still hold most deposits, but telcos and fintech apps often capture the high-frequency payment activity. That daily activity builds habit, data, and fee income.
EMMA signals that large banks in East Africa now see wallets as a defensive and growth product, not just a “lighter” banking app.
If EMMA gains traction, it could help Equity keep more payment volume inside its ecosystem. That can reduce customer churn, improve cross-sell into loans or savings, and strengthen its position in mobile commerce.
For fintechs and merchants, it also raises the stakes on acceptance. More wallets in the market usually means more competition for merchant checkout, QR payments, and low-cost transfers.
For users, the key test will be simple. Is it faster, cheaper, and more reliable than existing options, especially on USSD and SIM toolkit channels where many Kenyans still transact.
