The Central Bank of Kenya (CBK) says it is implementing artificial intelligence across its operations. The bank has identified nearly 300 AI use cases across 14 departments, according to its Head of Research.
CBK’s Head of Research said the bank’s AI strategy includes machine learning for inflation forecasting. Machine learning is a type of AI that learns patterns from data to make predictions.
The strategy also includes “economic nowcasting”, which means estimating what is happening in the economy in near real time. CBK plans to do this using alternative data and tools that analyse mobile payments and online supermarket prices, giving researchers additional information for monetary policy decisions.
The Head of Research said the bank was working to implement several applications in 2026 while assessing the opportunities and risks associated with the technology.
He described four levels of AI application at CBK, starting with routine or intelligent automation, then machine learning, then generative AI, and then agentic AI. Agentic AI refers to systems that can carry out tasks with more autonomy, including tasks currently handled by people.
CBK is also piloting an AI-based chatbot in its Financial Markets Department, according to the Head of Research.
CBK said economic volatility is making forecasting harder, and delays in official statistics make it difficult to assess current conditions. The bank is exploring how AI can complement conventional economic models and provide more timely indicators of inflation and economic activity.
The Head of Research pointed to the energy crisis that began in late February 2026 as an example of conditions that can complicate inflation forecasts. He said conventional models often split the economy into blocks, including the real economy, monetary conditions and the external sector, then model interactions. During disruptions, some relationships can change, reducing the reliability of traditional estimates.
