Bupa and Earthrise launched the £100,000 Planet Health Film Fund, offering five £20,000 grants and a SXSW London 2027 premiere slot.
Bupa and Earthrise have launched the Planet Health Film Fund, a £100,000 programme for short documentaries.
Five independent filmmakers will each receive £20,000.
The films are set to premiere at SXSW London 2027.
Bupa, an international healthcare company, and Earthrise, a social-first documentary and storytelling studio, announced the Planet Health Film Fund.
The fund will support five original short documentaries exploring “how deeply is our own health connected to the health of the world around us”.
Alongside the production funding, the programme will offer creative mentorship and industry expertise.
BAFTA Albert is the Sustainability Partner. SXSW London, YouTube, Together Films, and Screen Language are listed as Programme Partners.
An international jury will select five projects. Named jury members include Academy Award nominated director Tamara Kotevska, filmmaker Akinola Davies Jr., Paola Mottura from Sundance Institute, Netflix’s Kate Townsend, BAFTA Albert’s Matt Scarff, and indigenous climate activist and filmmaker Nina Gualinga.
Bupa Global Brand Director Fiona Bosman said, “At Bupa, we believe that healthy people need healthy environments. But making that connection meaningful takes more than facts and figures. Stories have an extraordinary power to change how we see the world, connect us to experiences beyond our own and inspire us to think differently about our health.”
Earthrise co-founder Alice Aedy said, “The connection between human health and the health of our planet is profound, yet remains surprisingly underexplored”.
Bupa and Earthrise said the new fund builds on Planet Health Stories, their 2025 collaboration.
That earlier project brought together 12 filmmakers from six countries for a social-first storytelling series.
The series reached more than 31 million people online. Bupa and Earthrise also said 93% of surveyed viewers reported feeling more connected to nature after watching.
With the film fund, the partners are moving from commissioning stories to directly financing independent filmmakers, with a festival premiere at SXSW London 2027 and a planned digital release for wider audiences.
