Bluecode Africa demoed interoperable QR payments at NIBSS NQR Demo Day in Lagos, letting users pay via an NQR bank app with one scan.
Bluecode Africa demonstrated interoperable QR payments at the NIBSS NQR Dynamic QR Demo Day in Lagos. The company showed a customer paying an eligible merchant using a bank’s NQR app with one scan.
Bluecode Africa took part in a March 2026 industry demo hosted around Nigeria’s NQR standard. NQR is a shared QR code format that aims to let different banks and payment schemes work together.
In its live demo, a consumer used an NQR-enabled bank app to pay at a Bluecode Africa merchant. The user did not need to download a new app. The merchant also did not need extra integration work, meaning no additional technical setup beyond already accepting Bluecode.
The payment processed in seconds at the point of sale. The key point was interoperability, which means two systems that used to operate separately can now complete a transaction end to end.
Bluecode’s product manager, Adedayo Lamina, led the session. The company said its rollout work with banks, including Tier-1 institutions, has helped build a network of more than 70,000 merchants and over one million enabled wallets.
The demo involved coordination with NIBSS, Chamsswitch, and a group of Nigerian banks. NIBSS is the interbank payments infrastructure provider that runs several national rails, including instant transfers and shared services.
Nigeria already has many QR and contactless payment options. The bigger bottleneck is fragmentation, where customers and merchants get locked into separate apps, schemes, and acceptance networks.
If NQR interoperability holds up outside demos, it can reduce duplicated integrations for merchants and make QR payments feel closer to card payments, tap, pay, and move on. For banks and fintechs, it also creates a clearer path to scale acceptance without forcing users to switch apps.
