Why did Uru shut down?

Uru was a Ghanaian ride-hailing app that launched on 21 April 2017, one of a wave of local competitors that appeared after Uber entered Ghana in 2016. It offered taxi hailing alongside charter, business and travel cars and parcel and truck delivery, and said it would operate in Ghana, Nigeria, Cameroon, Ivory Coast and Kenya. TechLabari's October 2022 review of ride-hailing in Ghana names Uru among the local competitors that emerged after Uber's arrival and says many of those early copycats had died or exited the market, without saying which.

What Uru attempted

Uru was an Uber-style app: passengers opened it, requested a car and were taken to their destination. Its differentiator was breadth of vehicle and service type from a single app (ordinary taxis, charter services, business cars, special travel cars, parcel delivery and truck delivery) and a stated multi-country footprint across Ghana, Nigeria, Cameroon, Ivory Coast and Kenya, with more countries promised. It was distributed via the iOS App Store and urudrive.com.

Early warning signs

TechLabari's April 2017 launch write-up already flagged the open questions: it was unclear whether Uru offered drivers better incentives than Uber, or riders any reason to switch, at a moment when Uber and Taxify were both established in Accra.

What happened

Uru let go of its own domain and it has been resold. urudrive.com (the address Tech Labari gave for the app in April 2017) now carries a registration created on 1 November 2025 through Freename Limited, sitting on ns1/ns2.afternic.com aftermarket nameservers plus a verification nameserver, and expiring 1 November 2026; the site 302-redirects to GoDaddy's 'for sale' landing page. A creation date of November 2025 means the original registration had been deleted and the name re-caught by a reseller. No Uru or urudrive app is listed on APKPure, and I found no surviving app listing on any store I could reach. The pattern matches its contemporaries: Enshika, named alongside Uru in the same Tech Labari review, also shows a fresh 2025 re-registration (enshika.com created 14 October 2025).

Lessons for future builders

Announcing five countries on launch day commits a company to costs in four places it has not tested. Uru published no numbers after April 2017, which is the usual sign that the launch was the product.
