Why did TalentBase shut down?

TalentBase, a Lagos HR-tech startup founded in 2016 by Ozioma Obiaka and Chika Uwazie that raised over $700K, is reported by LaunchBase Africa to have collapsed under scaling difficulties and market competition. A same-named 2021 acquisition by Finnish IT firm Loihde appears, per Loihde's own release, to involve an unrelated Finland/Sweden-based consulting firm (57 staff, EUR7.4M revenue) rather than this small Nigerian startup, so the "Acquired by Loihde" claim could not be corroborated for this company; by 2019 CEO Chika Uwazie had already stepped back and TalentBase was described as running "in stealth mode."

What happened

After early accelerator backing and press attention, the founder transitioned to other ventures and TalentBase, per LaunchBase Africa, "collapsed under the weight of scaling difficulties and market competition" in Nigeria's HR-tech space; some databases appear to conflate its fate with an unrelated Finnish company also named "Talent Base" that Loihde acquired in June 2021.

HR software is a crowded market where rivals compete on price, and TalentBase could not scale fast enough to hold its ground. Defend a clear edge and build a team and roadmap that outlast any one founder before chasing scale.
