Cassbana
Financial identities for the unbanked.
Epitaph
“Here lies Cassbana. It built financial identities for Egypt's micro-merchants and lent them inventory on the strength of their behaviour. Then its biggest backer withdrew a two-million-dollar promise, the round never closed, and the founders scattered.”

Autopsy report
Why did Cassbana shut down?
Cassbana, an Egyptian AI-powered fintech building financial identities and inventory financing for micro-merchants, ceased operations in July 2024 after British International Investment (BII) cancelled a $2 million equity commitment amid Egypt's macroeconomic downturn, triggering co-founder exits and a quiet operational pause.
What Cassbana attempted
Cassbana, founded in 2020 by Haitham Nassar (former Careem executive, CEO), Mostafa Barakat, and Mohamed Tarek, used AI and behavioral-data analysis to build financial identities for underserved micro-merchants in Egypt and provide inventory financing through distributor partnerships, with repayments feeding back into improved credit scores.
What worked
Cassbana raised over $1 million from investors including Disruptech, MSA Novo, Inclusive Fintech 50, Endure Capital, Full Circle Africa, COTU Ventures, Access Bridge Ventures, and Suya Ventures, and had secured a $2 million equity commitment from British International Investment (BII).
Early warning signs
The BII funding round remained incomplete, and co-founders Mohamed Tarek and Mostafa Barakat departed the company to pursue other opportunities before the shutdown was confirmed.
What happened
BII cancelled its previously committed $2 million equity investment amid Egypt's 2022-onward macroeconomic downturn (currency devaluation, high inflation) because the funding round was not fully completed. With insufficient revenue and its funding round collapsing, Cassbana quietly ceased operations, its co-founders departed, and its website went offline, while CEO Haitham Nassar said the company was 'actively pursuing a new funding round.'
Lessons for future builders
- An unsigned commitment is not cash, and building against it leaves you exposed when an investor walks. Keep spending inside money already banked, and hold a reserve so one cancelled cheque or a macro shock cannot force the doors shut.
