Autopsy report
Why did Acctual shut down?
Acctual was an invoicing and bill pay platform that let businesses send and receive payments in both fiat and stablecoins. Founded by Atikh Bana (CEO), Mohamedeq Mohamed, and Issa Hassan, it launched publicly in November 2023 alongside a $3.85 million seed round co-led by Third Prime and IDEO.
On September 15, 2026, Acctual announced that it was joining Altitude, the stablecoin-native business account built by Squads Labs. The founders said invoicing on its own was not enough, because invoices, payments, approvals, and ledger entries often sit in separate systems, and that connecting them inside one account would serve customers better.
The standalone Acctual platform stayed open until September 30, 2026. After that date, Acctual bank details, wallet addresses and payment links stopped working, and payments sent to them are returned to the sender. Accounts and data did not transfer automatically: customers had to export their records, open an Altitude account, complete business verification again, and reissue unpaid invoices from Altitude, where invoicing and bill pay are included free. The Acctual team moved to Altitude to build invoicing and bill pay into its product.
What Acctual attempted
Acctual set out to be a financial operating system for crypto-native businesses, automating accounts receivable and accounts payable across both fiat and digital assets. At its November 2023 launch, it raised $3.85 million in seed funding at a $15 million post-money valuation, co-led by Third Prime and IDEO, with Alchemy Ventures, OrangeDAO, and Soma Capital also participating. Its founders, Atikh Bana, Mohamedeq Mohamed, and Issa Hassan, came from Stripe and Google. CEO Atikh Bana described the goal as bringing standards and processes to financial operations in web3: paying vendors on time, avoiding overpayments, and sending funds to the correct wallet.
What worked
Acctual grew into a free invoicing and bill pay product for small businesses, freelancers, and agencies. Customers could get paid by bank transfer or in stablecoins, use dedicated bank details, wallet addresses, and payment links, and sync crypto invoices and payments to QuickBooks or Xero. The team also published guides on stablecoin invoicing and taxes and a directory of businesses that accept stablecoins.
Early warning signs
In their farewell letter, the founders said invoicing alone was not enough. Invoices, payments, approvals, and ledger entries often lived in separate systems, which left customers doing manual work. A standalone invoicing tool also competes with broader business accounts that bundle invoicing in for free.
What happened
On September 15, 2026, Acctual announced that it was joining Altitude, the stablecoin-native business account built by Squads Labs. Altitude offers USD and EUR accounts, corporate cards, global payments and stablecoins, and automated payables, receivables, and accounting workflows. The Acctual team moved over to build invoicing and bill pay into Altitude. The announcement did not describe the move as an acquisition, and no deal terms were disclosed.
The standalone Acctual platform closed on September 30, 2026. From that date, Acctual bank details, wallet addresses, and payment links stopped working, and payments sent to them are returned to the sender. Accounts and data did not migrate automatically, so customers had to export their records, open an Altitude account, complete business verification again, and reissue unpaid invoices from Altitude.
What future founders can do differently
A single workflow such as invoicing is easy to bundle into a larger platform for free, so plan early for how the product becomes part of the place where customers already hold and move money. When a product handles payment rails, give customers enough notice to update the bank details and wallet addresses their clients have saved, because a hard cutoff means payments bounce back to senders.
Lessons for future builders
- A single finance workflow like invoicing is easy for broader business accounts to bundle in for free, so plan early for how your product connects to where customers hold and move money.
- If customers' clients pay into your bank details, wallet addresses, or payment links, a shutdown breaks their incoming payments. Give long notice, clear export tools, and a way to redirect saved payment details.
- Joining a larger platform can keep a product's vision alive, but if accounts and data do not migrate automatically, users still face the full cost of switching.
