Injini has launched an eight-month AI for Education venture builder for Southern African teams, with $125,000 in equity-free seed funding for top startups.
Injini, an African EdTech accelerator, has launched an eight-month programme to help early-stage teams build AI for Education products for classrooms in Southern Africa. AI, or artificial intelligence, is software that can learn patterns from data and make useful predictions or recommendations.
The programme is called the AI for Education Venture Builder and Incubation Programme. It is supported by Coefficient Giving.
Injini plans to select 12 teams from Botswana, Eswatini, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa, Zambia and Zimbabwe. Unlike many accelerators, applicants do not need an existing startup or working product. They need a well-developed idea that addresses an education challenge.
Focus areas include foundational learning, teacher support, learner pathways, inclusion and education ecosystem engagement. Foundational learning means basic reading, writing and numeracy skills.
Selected teams will spend five months validating the problem, designing a solution, building an AI-powered minimum viable product, and testing it with learners and educators. A minimum viable product is a simple first version built to test whether people will use it.
After that, the five strongest teams move into a three-month incubation phase. Each of those teams will receive $25,000 in equity-free seed funding, meaning Injini does not take ownership in exchange for the money.
The venture-building phase is scheduled for November 2026 to March 2027. Incubation runs from April to June 2027. Applications are expected to close on September 27, 2026.
Many AI programmes in Africa target teams that already have traction. Injini is widening the funnel by backing idea-stage builders, which can help more educators, researchers and engineers turn classroom problems into tested products.
The equity-free structure also lowers the cost of experimentation for founders. For EdTech in Southern Africa, that can mean more pilots in schools, better impact measurement, and clearer go-to-market plans before teams raise outside capital.
