Algeria launched its first AI and cybersecurity startup cluster in Sidi Abdellah, aiming to link universities, research, and startups into real products.
Algeria has launched its first startup cluster focused on AI and cybersecurity. The goal is to turn university research into deployable products and new companies.
The AI and cybersecurity startup cluster opened at the Scientific and Technological Pole “Chahid Abdelhafid-Ihaddaden” in Sidi Abdellah. The initiative is being overseen by Algeria’s ministries responsible for higher education, startups and the knowledge economy, and post and telecommunications.
Officials described the cluster approach as a shift away from isolated startup programmes. A cluster is a formal hub that groups universities, research centres, and early-stage companies in one place so they can share labs, mentors, and industry links.
The plan is to shorten the “research to market” gap, meaning academic work moves faster into products customers can buy. The cluster’s focus areas are artificial intelligence, which is software that learns patterns from data, and cybersecurity, which protects systems from hacking and fraud.
Algeria is trying to build more homegrown tech companies while tackling high youth unemployment. A specialised cluster can help students and researchers become founders by giving them a clearer path to pilots, procurement, and partnerships in sectors like health, agriculture, energy, and digital services.
The location matters too. The Abdelhafid Ihaddaden hub spans 87 hectares and includes national schools in mathematics, nanosciences, autonomous systems, and AI, plus student housing. Algeria’s National School of Artificial Intelligence, opened in 2021, is part of this ecosystem.
Algeria reportedly has more than 7,800 registered startups and is targeting 20,000 by 2029. Officials also signalled the cluster model could expand to other campuses, with 2027 mentioned as a milestone for consolidating knowledge-driven growth.
