Absa Group says first-half headline earnings rose 8% to R12.8bn, backed by 4% revenue growth to R58.8bn and lower credit impairments.
Absa Group posted higher profits for the six months ended 30 June 2026. Absa Group said headline earnings increased 8% to R12.8 billion, supported by 4% revenue growth to R58.8 billion.
The bank said revenue growth came from both net interest income and non-interest income. Net interest income, meaning the interest Absa earns on loans minus what it pays on deposits, rose 3%. Non-interest income rose 6%, helped by higher fee and commission income and a solid performance from its markets business.
Absa said customer activity remained healthy. Net customer loans and advances grew 6%, and customer deposits rose 5%. It also flagged margin compression, meaning it is earning less per rand lent, due to lower rates in some African markets and competitive pricing in South Africa’s corporate and investment banking.
On costs, operating expenses rose 4% to R31.4 billion. The cost-to-income ratio, which shows how much it spends to earn a rand of revenue, edged up to 53.4% from 53.2%.
Credit quality improved slightly. Impairments fell 1% to R7.1 billion, and the credit loss ratio improved to 94 basis points from 100 basis points. A lower credit loss ratio means fewer loan losses relative to the size of the loan book.
For African fintechs and software vendors selling into banks, Absa’s results suggest continued spend on “strategic initiatives” even as cost discipline tightens. That usually means fewer large, open-ended projects and more demand for tools that show measurable payback.
For investors, the update points to steady balance sheet growth, improving loan performance, and a strong capital position. Absa reported a Common Equity Tier 1 ratio of 12.8%, above its board target range of 11.0% to 12.5%. The group also increased its interim dividend per share by 8% to 850 cents.
On product and platform direction, Absa’s CEO said the bank is focused on deeper client relationships, stronger digital capabilities, and building a more integrated pan-African business. Absa’s consumer-facing ecosystem includes Spark by Absa, which sits alongside the group’s core banking channels.
