Truckr

On-demand haulage truck booking

Epitaph

Here lies Truckr. It matched shippers with vetted truck operators, won $100,000 from MEST and a pitch prize in 2019, and claimed two hundred active trucks. Its own investor quietly dropped it from the portfolio page while its cohort-mates stayed. The last load was never collected.

Autopsy report

Why did Truckr shut down?

Truckr, also referred to as Truckrtech, was a Ghanaian logistics startup founded in 2018 by a team that met on the Meltwater Entrepreneurial School of Technology programme in Accra, including Caryl Joshua Akonor and co-founder and COO Tshepo Morabane. It operated a digital marketplace matching shippers with vetted truck operators and won $100,000 of seed funding from MEST in September 2018. It launched in beta in late March 2019 and won the 2019 TechCircle Pitch2Win competition in June that year. No reporting on how or when it ended was found.

What Truckr attempted

Truckr was an online platform on which manufacturers, distributors, exporters and freight forwarders could book haulage trucks. It combined web and mobile apps with IoT tracking devices and matching algorithms to pair shipments with available vehicles, cut empty running, give shippers real-time cargo visibility and transit insurance, and open a communication channel between shipper and driver. It made money from booking commissions, subscriptions and sales of the tracking hardware. Short-term expansion was targeted at Togo, Ivory Coast, Burkina Faso and Nigeria.

What worked

MEST invested $100,000 in Truckr in September 2018 as one of seven African startups in a $700,000 round. The beta launched in late March 2019 with a public rollout planned for May 2019, and Disrupt Africa reported over 200 actively engaged trucks and association with roughly 5,000 trucks. In June 2019 Truckrtech won the TechCircle Pitch2Win competition, organised with Japan's FreakOut Holdings, taking $2,700 in equity funding; the founder said the company had done $12,000 in revenue between May and June 2019 and projected 15% month-on-month growth.

What happened

Two independent strands, neither of them a published report. First, MEST Africa's current portfolio page (meltwater.org/our-entrepreneurs) lists 43 companies and Truckr is not among them: but five of the six other startups from the same September 2018 $700,000 MEST round are still listed (Nvoicia, Judy, Jumeni, Codelyn and BACE), so Truckr has been pruned from its own investor's portfolio while its cohort-mates have not. Second, truckrtech.com has been let go: the current WHOIS registration was created on 24 January 2026 through DropCatch.com 972 LLC (a drop-catch registrar, meaning the previous registration had been deleted) and the domain now 302-redirects to a HugeDomains for-sale listing.

Lessons for future builders

  • Two hundred active trucks and an award do not make a marketplace; haulage pays on completion and the working capital sits with whoever waits. When an investor quietly drops a company from its portfolio page while keeping its cohort-mates, that is the closing notice nobody wrote.
