Autopsy report

Why did Sesacash shut down?

Sesacash was a Ghanaian fintech founded in 2018 and led by co-founder and CEO Blaise Bayuo. It ran a multi-currency blockchain wallet that let users in Ghana and Nigeria hold and move traditional and digital currencies, with cryptocurrency cashback as its acquisition hook. No published reporting was found on whether, when or why the company stopped operating.

What Sesacash attempted

A blockchain-based wallet supporting up to 20 traditional and digital currencies, allowing users to store, send and spend funds, with a planned 'Sesa' debit card for spending crypto and African currencies. Revenue came from transaction fees. The company had pivoted from running a crypto exchange to addressing broader payment problems, particularly the cost of cross-border payments for African SMEs, and used a token economy of crypto cashback rewards plus an affiliate referral programme to drive adoption.

What worked

Reported over 1,000 users growing organically as of April 2020, operating in Ghana and Nigeria. Received roughly $100,000 in liquidity support from trustees and grant awards from the Telos blockchain community. Profiled by Disrupt Africa in April 2020.

What happened

The company's Medium account (@sesacash) holds exactly ten posts, running from 13 December 2019 to 13 April 2020, and stops dead there: the last being a partnership announcement with P2P trading platform CryptoLocally. Despite a 29 March 2020 post headlined "Get the All-new Sesacash App", no Sesacash app exists on APKPure or Google Play today. The Internet Archive's latest HTTP 200 capture of sesacash.com is 27 May 2022, and the domain now serves an entirely different product, JangoSend, a GHSC-stablecoin escrow/payments page carrying no Sesacash branding.

Lessons for future builders

  • Paying users in tokens to sign up buys registrations, not habits, and a thousand users after two years said which of the two Sesacash had bought. When a company's blog stops mid-partnership, the runway usually ran out before the story did.
