Rabarides

Carpooling for accra commuters

Epitaph

โ€œHere lies Raba Rides. It let Accra drivers pick up commuters heading the same way, priced for the people Uber had already priced out. One archived page from January 2023 is the whole record. The site still answers, and still refuses to take anyone.โ€

TechLabari's state-of-ride-sharing review says Rabarides and Vielly 'seem to have closed up shop or died off'

Autopsy report

Why did Rabarides shut down?

Rabarides (styled 'Raba Rides') was a carpooling platform for commuters in Accra, Ghana, letting car owners pick up passengers travelling in the same direction for a fee, with advance booking for regular work commutes. It was pitched as a cheaper alternative to Uber and Taxify for Ghanaian commuters priced out of ride-hailing. In an October 2022 review of ride-sharing in Ghana, TechLabari wrote that Rabarides and a similar service, Vielly, 'seem to have closed up shop or died off'. No shutdown announcement, date or reason has been published, and no founder names or funding are documented anywhere I could reach.

What Rabarides attempted

A carpooling and ride-sharing app for Accra. Vehicle owners already making a journey could offer the spare seats to commuters heading the same way and be compensated for it; passengers could also book rides in advance for their regular commute to work. The positioning was explicitly economic: Uber and Taxify existed in Accra but were unaffordable for a large share of daily commuters, and pooling was the answer to that price gap.

What happened

rabarides.com still resolves but refuses requests with HTTP 403 (checked August 2026), and the Internet Archive holds exactly one capture of it (27 January 2023, HTTP 200) with nothing before or after, so the site was serving content as late as January 2023 and has left no trace since. No Raba Rides app exists on APKPure (a search returns only Via Transportation's unrelated US transit app), and no Ghanaian outlet I could reach has mentioned the company since 2022.

Lessons for future builders

  • Serving the people a market has priced out means serving the people least able to pay, and carpooling only works once enough drivers and riders share a route at the same hour. Density is the product; without it the app is a page nobody visits.
