Mobidoc
Healthcare at your fingertips
Epitaph
“Here lies Mobidoc. It offered Nigerians remote consultations, medical records, and digital prescriptions from a phone. But patients kept choosing the clinic waiting room, and no amount of connectivity could convince them to pay. The doctor was in; the patients were not.”

Autopsy report
Why did Mobidoc shut down?
Abuja-based telemedicine startup Mobidoc, founded in 2016 by Timi Aiyemo and Abiodun Okunola to offer remote consultations and digital prescriptions, ceased operations around February 2019 after struggling to convert users in a market with high data costs, low trust in digital payments, and a strong patient preference for in-person care.
What Mobidoc attempted
Mobidoc was a mobile wellness platform designed to bridge the doctor-patient gap in Nigeria via remote consultations, electronic medical records, and digital prescriptions.
What happened
Mobidoc launched a B2C telemedicine product at a time when high mobile data costs and low trust in digital payments limited adoption in Nigeria. Patients continued to prefer physical clinic visits for serious ailments, undermining user retention, and the company was unable to build a sustainable monetization path, leading it to shut down around February 2019, roughly three years after launch.
Lessons for future builders
- Digital convenience rarely overrides ingrained habits or a market's willingness to pay for them. Before scaling a behaviour-change health product, test whether target users will actually pay, and price around the real data costs and trust gaps they face.
