Why did WeFarm Shop shut down?

WeFarm Shop, the e-commerce arm of Kenya/Uganda/Tanzania-based peer-to-peer farmer platform WeFarm that let farmers buy agricultural products online, was shut down in July 2022 after roughly a year in operation, with WeFarm's Director of Growth citing difficult market conditions that made the venture hard to scale; the core WeFarm knowledge-sharing platform continued operating.

What WeFarm Shop attempted

WeFarm Shop was an e-commerce feature added to WeFarm's peer-to-peer farmer knowledge platform, letting smallholder farmers in Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania buy agricultural products online alongside sharing farming advice.

What worked

WeFarm, the parent platform (founded 2014), had previously raised Series A funding and grown a large peer-to-peer farmer knowledge network; the Shop feature launched and ran for about a year before being discontinued, while the core knowledge-sharing platform remained live after the Shop closed.

What happened

About nine months to a year after launch, WeFarm announced in July 2022 that it was closing the Shop feature, with Director of Growth Sofie Mala stating that 'current market conditions make this avenue a difficult one [to] set up and to scale,' while continuing to operate its core advice-sharing platform.

Lessons for future builders

An engaged audience does not automatically become a working storefront; commerce carries its own margins, logistics, and scale demands. Test the unit economics on a small catalogue before betting that community traffic will carry a full e-commerce operation.
