Paxful

Peer-to-peer cryptocurrency marketplace

Epitaph

Here lies Paxful. For a decade it matched buyers and sellers of Bitcoin across emerging markets using local money. Then the compliance bill for its founders' early shortcuts came due, and no counterparty could cover it. Trading closed for good.

Autopsy report

Why did Paxful shut down?

Peer-to-peer crypto marketplace Paxful announced on October 1, 2025 that it would wind down operations by November 1, 2025, blaming the lasting impact of historic misconduct by former co-founders Ray Youssef and Artur Schaback (who had allowed unverified KYC-free trading and, in Schaback's case, pleaded guilty in 2024 to AML conspiracy charges) combined with unsustainable compliance-remediation costs.

What Paxful attempted

Paxful operated a global peer-to-peer marketplace for buying and selling Bitcoin, popular in Africa and other emerging markets for enabling trades using local payment methods like mobile money and bank transfers.

What worked

Paxful operated for roughly a decade as one of Africa's leading P2P crypto platforms, and in 2025 announced formal conclusion of its DOJ and FinCEN matters before ultimately deciding to close.

Early warning signs

Co-founder Artur Schaback allowed KYC-free trading between 2015-2019 and later pleaded guilty (2024) to AML conspiracy charges, admitting to presenting falsified compliance documents; co-founder Ray Youssef stepped down as CEO in 2023 amid the platform's earlier suspension.

What happened

Paxful suspended operations in 2023 after Youssef's exit and resumed under new CEO Roshan Dharia. Following Schaback's 2024 guilty plea and resignation from the board, the company continued to absorb rising compliance-remediation costs tied to the founders' earlier misconduct. On October 1, 2025 Paxful announced it would wind down entirely by November 1, 2025, closing user access to funds after that date.

Lessons for future builders

  • In regulated finance, skipped compliance is a loan against the future that compounds with interest. Build KYC and anti-money-laundering controls from day one, because remediating years of missing records can cost more than the business can ever earn back.
