myPadi
Making school stress-free
Epitaph
โHere lies myPadi. It matched Nigerian students and corps members with verified off-campus housing and landlords, winning awards and seed money early. Then its search, login, and registration quietly broke and stayed broken. The vacancy sign never came back on.โ

Autopsy report
Why did myPadi shut down?
Nigerian student-housing marketplace myPadi (originally Studacom.ng), which had won early awards and raised seed funding from EchoVC in 2018, went functionally dark sometime in 2018-2019 โ its site's search, login and registration stopped working and social activity ceased around May 2019 โ with Techpoint unable to get a clear answer from the CEO and Crunchbase later listing it as inactive.
What myPadi attempted
myPadi (launched 2016 as Studacom.ng) was a hyper-local platform connecting students and NYSC corps members with verified off-campus housing and landlords in Nigeria.
What worked
Won the StartUp South competition (2016), a $5,000 grant at GITEX Dubai and recognition as best e-housing startup by NITDA (2017), $20,000 from Ventures Platform's accelerator cohort, seed funding from EchoVC Partners (2018), and was a finalist in the inaugural Techpoint Build.
Early warning signs
By September 2019, the website's search, login and registration features were non-functional and had shown no service-related social media activity since roughly May 2019; the CEO attributed it to a 'database issue' the dev team would fix, an explanation Techpoint questioned given the prolonged outage.
What happened
After early competition wins and EchoVC seed funding in 2018, myPadi's platform stopped functioning properly โ search, login and registration were broken and service-related social posts stopped around May 2019. CEO Joel Amawhe told Techpoint it was a database issue awaiting a fix, but the site remained broken for months with no clear resolution, and the company was later listed as inactive on Crunchbase. Batch data records a September 2018 shutdown date, but the sourced evidence found points instead to the platform breaking down and going dark around mid-to-late 2019.
Lessons for future builders
- Early awards and funding mean nothing once the product stops working and no one restores it. Treat core availability โ search, sign-up, login โ as the business's lifeline, with monitoring and a real recovery plan, not a fix the team gets to later.
