## In Short
- Yellow Card says this settlement layer runs in the background, with no change to how senders and recipients use Western Union.
- Yellow Card says stablecoins are converted into local fiat currency through its regulated payout rails for recipients in Latin America and Africa.

## What Happened: How Yellow Card Supports Western Union Settlement
[Yellow Card](/yellow-card) says Western Union is using its licensed stablecoin infrastructure as a backend settlement layer for cross-border money transfers. The case study says the goal is to address “dollar-liquidity” constraints, meaning limited access to U.S. dollars in some markets, and the gaps this can create between what is sent and what arrives.

Yellow Card lays out a three-step flow. First, senders initiate a transfer through Western Union’s existing network “with no disruption to the user journey.” Second, instead of relying on “a chain of intermediary correspondent banks,” Western Union settles on the backend using Yellow Card’s API infrastructure and U.S. dollar-pegged stablecoins. A stablecoin is a crypto token designed to track a currency, in this case the U.S. dollar.

Third, Yellow Card says the stablecoins are converted to local fiat currencies through its “regulated payout rails,” and recipients across Latin America and Africa receive funds faster and are “insulated from local dollar scarcity.”

## Why It Matters
Yellow Card argues this model reduces dependence on correspondent banking chains and traditional clearing houses. It also says using local liquidity pools for FX conversion can avoid FX rates “typical of legacy correspondent routes.”

The case study also positions the setup as a single settlement layer that could scale into more corridors, with Yellow Card handling local payout partnerships and regulatory licensing across its markets.
