## Content

## In Short
- xneelo is dealing with intermittent email connectivity on shared servers in Johannesburg.
- The company linked the issue to a software bottleneck after a major operating system upgrade.
- Engineers are migrating affected email data and background workloads to a high-performance storage tier.

## What Happened
[xneelo](/xneelo) reported intermittent email connectivity affecting managed hosting email on shared servers in Johannesburg. The incident started on September 1 and was still ongoing as of September 4.

xneelo said the disruption followed a major operating system upgrade. It identified an unexpected performance bottleneck in its email storage layer. A bottleneck is a slowdown where one part of a system cannot keep up, like a single open till in a busy supermarket.

According to updates, the new operating system changed how data is queued and written to the high-capacity drives used for email storage. This increased the number of small background disk writes from routine tasks and system logging. Those extra writes reduced the capacity available to process email quickly.

To reduce load, engineers moved some background logging processes onto a high-performance storage tier. They also began migrating server data from high-capacity storage to faster storage. On September 4, the company said migrations were progressing slowly but steadily.

xneelo also started a targeted platform adjustment by moving the background system that catalogues and organises mailboxes to faster drives. This system handles frequent “directory lookups”, meaning constant checks for mailbox data.

## Why It Matters
Email delays and timeouts can hit invoicing, customer support, and internal approvals, especially for SMEs that run on hosted email.

xneelo said email remains securely queued and it has no evidence of lost customer messages or data. Some customers may see a “failed to save to Sent folder” error after sending, but the message should still be sent, even if a copy does not appear in Sent.

The incident also shows a common risk in infrastructure upgrades. Even when hardware is fine, software changes can alter how storage is used, and that can affect reliability during peak hours.

xneelo said affected customers will receive a detailed incident report once service is fully restored and stable.
