## What Happened: How MyBroadband Ranked Fibre Networks
Vumatel was named the top fibre network operator in South Africa in MyBroadband Insights’ Q3 2026 research report.

Latency is the delay before data starts moving, like the pause before a video begins. Jitter is how much that delay varies, which can cause choppy calls.

## What Happened: Network Footprints For Vumatel, Openserve, And Octotel
Vumatel was founded in 2014 by Niel Schoeman, Johan Pretorius, and Richard Came. As of 31 March 2026, its fibre network passed 2,339,932 homes and 1,032,226 homes were connected.

[Openserve](/openserve) was officially launched on 13 October 2015, after Telkom separated wholesale and network operations from its retail business. Openserve reported 1,565,750 homes passed as of 30 June 2026, with 843,563 homes connected.

## Why It Matters: Performance As Competition Grows

In that environment, MyBroadband framed network performance and customer satisfaction as key differentiators for fibre network operators.
