## Content

## In Short
Vodacom has partnered with the University of Johannesburg (UJ), working with AWS, to build South Africa’s pipeline of job-ready AI and data science talent.

## What Happened
[Vodacom](/vodacom) says it is collaborating with the University of Johannesburg and Amazon Web Services (AWS) on learning programmes, postgraduate research, and industry mentorship focused on artificial intelligence (AI) and data science.

AI is software that can learn patterns from data and make decisions, similar to how a person learns from experience but at larger scale. Data science is the process of turning raw data into usable insights, like sorting and interpreting a big spreadsheet to answer business questions.

The partnership will be delivered through UJ’s School of Consumer Intelligence and Information Systems, via its Centre for Applied Data Science. The plan includes co-designed coursework, support for postgraduate research, and mentorship that connects students to real problems from industry.

Vodacom says some work is already underway. Master’s students are researching autonomous AI systems for cybersecurity, meaning software that can help detect, analyse, and respond to cyber threats across telecommunications networks with less manual intervention.

Another research track is exploring blockchain-based approaches for digital identity management. Blockchain is a shared, tamper-resistant record, similar to a logbook that many parties can verify, and the aim is to reduce identity theft and strengthen how identities are verified.

AWS will provide access to cloud computing and AI tools, including Amazon Bedrock and other services used to build and test AI models. Cloud computing is renting computing power over the internet instead of buying servers.

## Why It Matters
South Africa’s AI hiring demand is rising, but many employers say they struggle to find candidates who can apply skills in production environments. Programmes that combine coursework, research, and practical exposure can shorten the gap between university and the workplace.

For telcos, AI skills are also becoming a core operational need, especially in network security, fraud prevention, and customer operations. If the model works in South Africa, Vodacom says it could be extended across other Vodacom Group markets over time.
