## Content

## In Short
UniBeta is an exam prep product for Nigerian university students.

It uses AI to find “high-yield” topics, meaning the themes that show up often in past questions.

The founders say they rebuilt it after an earlier attempt to bundle too many campus services into one app.

## What Happened
UniBeta is repositioning as an AI-powered revision tool for Nigerian undergraduates. The idea is simple, it helps students study what is most likely to matter in exams.

The founders, Dare Adeola and Olamide Onigbanjo, started out at the University of Lagos with a broader plan. They tried to build a campus “everything app” that included timetable planning, peer tutoring, street interviews, and a marketplace.

That approach did not work. The outsourced app reportedly shipped with bugs, struggled with app store review processes, and put pressure on their finances.

They also ran into a common edtech usage pattern in Nigeria. Many students download study apps close to exams, then stop using them once exams end.

After the reset, UniBeta focused on a narrower job. It trains AI models to read and organise local course content and past papers, then clusters questions into repeatable topics. That matters because general-purpose chatbots like ChatGPT can struggle with messy inputs like photocopied course packs and school-specific syllabuses.

## Why It Matters
Student learning tools are crowded, but most “AI tutor” products still rely on generic internet knowledge. UniBeta is betting that Nigerian university exams require local context, including lecturer preferences and department-specific materials.

If the product works, it could improve exam readiness without forcing students to sift through years of past questions manually. It could also reduce last-minute cram cycles by turning revision into a structured plan.

For African edtech founders, the story is another reminder that focus often beats breadth. Building a super app for students sounds attractive, but reliability and one clear use case usually matter more than feature count.

The bigger question is retention. UniBeta will need to prove it can keep students engaged outside exam season, or build a business model that still works with peak-and-drop demand.
