## Content

## In Short
- UNDP has opened applications for upcoming cohorts of its pan-African timbuktoo HealthTech LaunchPad.
- The programme targets African HealthTech startups with a prototype or minimum viable product.
- Cohorts run quarterly, starting from December 2026, with more planned in 2027.

## What Happened
UNDP has opened applications for upcoming cohorts of its timbuktoo HealthTech LaunchPad. The programme is run from the UNDP timbuktoo HealthTech Hub in Kigali, Rwanda, and is open to eligible startups across the continent.

The HealthTech LaunchPad is designed to provide incubation and mentorship, plus connections to investors and ecosystem partners. Incubation here means structured support to help a startup build, test, and grow its product, similar to a guided training programme for a business.

Selected startups will be matched with accredited Entrepreneurship Support Organisations, or ESOs, which are incubators and accelerators that provide hands-on support. Startups in countries without an accredited ESO can still participate through virtual support from an ESO in another country.

UNDP says it is looking for startups in areas like telemedicine (remote doctor consultations), digital health tools, AI for healthcare (software that helps analyse data and make predictions), medical devices and diagnostics, biotech, nutrition technology, and health supply chain solutions.

Participants will also get “investment readiness” support, which typically includes pitch coaching, fundraising materials, and investor introductions. The programme includes access to a digital platform powered by Seedstars’ SIGMA, which offers learning resources, mentorship matching, and AI-supported guidance.

The first cohort, scheduled to start in September 2026, has already closed. UNDP is now considering applications for the second cohort expected to start in December 2026, plus additional rounds planned for March and June 2027.

## Why It Matters
African healthtech startups often face a gap between early pilots and real scale, especially when they need clinical validation, partnerships, and regulated distribution. A pan-African launchpad that supports both in-person and remote participation could help more teams access experienced incubators and investor networks, even when their local ecosystem is thin.

This programme also ties into UNDP’s wider timbuktoo initiative, which targets $1 billion mobilisation over 10 years and support for 10,000 startups. For founders, the near-term value is practical: clearer product direction, stronger fundraising readiness, and a more credible path to scale across multiple African healthcare markets.
