## Content

## In Short
- UMB Ghana has approval from the Bank of Ghana (BoG) and the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) to offer virtual accounts to eligible businesses in the virtual asset ecosystem.
- It is the first bank in Ghana to get this dual approval for this type of service.
- The offering still depends on regulatory requirements and eligibility checks.

## What Happened
UMB Ghana has been cleared by BoG and the SEC to roll out virtual accounts for eligible firms operating in Ghana’s emerging virtual asset ecosystem. Virtual assets are blockchain-based digital assets, like crypto tokens, and the firms that support them are often called VASPs, meaning virtual asset service providers.

A virtual account is a unique bank account number that sits under a main bank account. It helps businesses separate customer payments, track transactions, and reconcile funds faster, similar to giving each customer or product line its own “folder” for payments.

The approval positions [UMB Ghana](/umb-ghana) to serve virtual asset businesses, fintechs, and other technology companies that need access to regulated banking infrastructure. The bank said the product will be provided within the applicable rules, and only for businesses that meet the eligibility criteria.

UMB also framed the move as part of wider digital banking investments, including SpeedApp and its internet banking services, plus other retail and business products.

## Why It Matters
For Ghana’s virtual asset market, access to regulated bank rails is a practical bottleneck. Many crypto and token-related firms struggle with basic banking needs such as collections, payouts, and clear transaction records.

BoG and SEC approval signals a more structured path for compliant firms to participate in the formal financial system. It also raises the bar on controls like KYC and AML, meaning customer checks and anti-money laundering monitoring.

For startups and operators, this could reduce friction in areas like payment reconciliation, audit trails, and settlement with local partners. For regulators, it keeps more activity inside supervised institutions, where reporting and risk controls are easier to enforce.
