## Content

## In Short
- UfarmX is building a data-driven way to finance smallholder farmers.
- It combines farmer profiles, credit scoring, and insurance to reduce lender risk.
- The company started in Nigeria after its founder saw nearby farmers could not access capital for inputs.

## What Happened
UfarmX is positioning smallholder farmers as a stronger lending opportunity than many banks assume. The startup, [UfarmX](/ufarmx), uses farmer data to generate credit scores, which are risk ratings that help lenders decide who can borrow and on what terms.

The idea came from founder Alexander Zanders’ experience farming 100 acres in Nigeria during the COVID period. He noticed nearby farmers produced much lower yields, not because they lacked skill, but because they could not afford quality seeds, fertiliser, and crop protection products. Traditional lenders often avoid this segment because small farms have limited paperwork and income can be seasonal.

UfarmX began by extending inputs on credit to neighbouring farmers and tracking outcomes. According to the report, many farmers saw yields triple and revenue double. That early pilot became the basis for building a broader system that collects farmer data and turns it into a usable score for financing decisions.

Beyond scoring, UfarmX is also using insurance to reduce the impact of shocks like bad weather. Insurance, in simple terms, is a payout that helps cover losses when a defined event happens, like drought.

## Why It Matters
Agriculture employs a large share of Africa’s workforce, but farmers receive a small slice of commercial bank lending. Better credit scoring can help bridge that gap by giving lenders a clearer view of repayment ability, even without formal credit histories.

If UfarmX can scale its underwriting model across more regions, it could help input financing grow, improve yields, and make farm lending less dependent on guesswork. It also signals a broader shift in African fintech toward serving sectors like agriculture with specialised data models, not just consumer loans.
