## Content

## In Short
- UfarmX has facilitated over $6.8 million in agricultural trade across more than 10,000 farmers.
- The company does not farm or lend directly. It provides credit infrastructure for farmers.
- It operates across Nigeria, Senegal, and Liberia, and grew out of a farming experiment in Oyo State.

## What Happened
UfarmX is building a farmer credit scoring engine in West Africa, starting from Nigeria. The idea is simple, it helps other businesses decide which farmers are safe to lend to.

The company began with founder Alexander Zanders’ pivot into farming in 2015, after a weaker naira made imported processing machinery too expensive. Zanders bought farmland in Oyo State and ran a pilot where he supplied 15 local maize growers with inputs on credit.

That trial produced a clear result, yields tripled and farmer revenues doubled. More importantly for UfarmX, it revealed usable financial signals in farm activity, including what farmers planted, how they managed inputs, and how reliably they repaid.

Today, [UfarmX](/ufarmx) positions itself as credit infrastructure, not a lender. “Credit infrastructure” means it provides the rails for lending, such as risk checks and decision tools, while banks and retailers provide the money or goods.

UfarmX evaluates farmer creditworthiness using proprietary data. It then shares a credit rating that agro-retailers can use to extend fertiliser, seeds, and other inputs on credit, and that commercial banks can use when assessing farm-related loans.

## Why It Matters
Agriculture in Africa has a credit gap, partly because many smallholder farmers lack formal financial histories. A credit score built from farm-level data can act like an alternative financial record.

For agro-retailers, better scoring can reduce defaults and make “buy now, pay after harvest” input financing more practical. For banks, it can make rural lending less guesswork-driven.

If UfarmX can keep improving data quality and repayment outcomes across markets like Nigeria, Senegal, and Liberia, it could become a key layer in how input credit and trade finance scale in African agribusiness.
