## Content

## In Short
- Uber and Zipline announced a strategic partnership to scale drone delivery in the US.
- Autonomous drone delivery on Uber Eats is expected to start later in 2026.
- The companies are targeting one million drone deliveries per day by the end of 2029, and Uber will invest an undisclosed amount in Zipline.

## What Happened
Uber and Zipline say they will bring drone delivery to [Uber Eats](/uber-eats) customers in the US, with the first deployments planned for later this year.

Uber said the rollout will begin in existing Zipline markets, then expand into dozens of US cities. The companies did not share a list of launch cities or merchant categories.

Zipline’s drones are autonomous, meaning they can fly without a pilot controlling each trip in real time. In practice, this is closer to a self-driving vehicle in the air, with safety systems and human oversight.

Uber also said it will make a strategic investment in Zipline. The size and terms of the investment were not disclosed.

Both companies framed the deal as part of a hybrid delivery network. That means using different delivery modes, like couriers, robots, and drones, depending on the route and order.

## Why It Matters
For delivery platforms, drone delivery is a bet on speed and unit economics, meaning the cost to complete one delivery. If drones can lower costs on short trips and reduce reliance on human couriers in some zones, it could change how platforms price “fast delivery” options.

For merchants, especially smaller stores, faster delivery can increase conversion, but only if the service is reliable and widely available. Drone delivery also adds operational requirements, like safe drop zones and workflows for handing packages to the drone system.

For African tech watchers, Zipline’s scale is the key signal. Zipline already operates on multiple continents and has built deep logistics experience in markets across Africa. A major US consumer partnership could strengthen its capital base and accelerate product development that may later flow back into African health and commerce delivery networks.

In the near term, the open questions are regulatory approvals, city-by-city rollout pace, and whether customers will pay extra for 5 to 10 minute delivery windows.
