## What Happened
Tanzania Telecommunications Corporation, [TTCL](/ttcl), hosted Communications and Information Technology Minister Angellah Kairuki at its FTTX demonstration centre in Kijitonyama. During the visit, the minister called on citizens and businesses to use TTCL services, with a focus on Faiba Mlangoni Kwako, the company’s fibre to the home broadband offer.

FTTX means “fibre to the x”, a catch-all term for fibre optic internet that runs close to users, like fibre to a home or office. Fibre optic cables carry data using light, which can deliver faster and more stable internet than older copper lines.

TTCL’s director general, Moremi Marwa, said the operator has built capacity for roughly 330,000 connections and is working toward an additional 400,000. That would take potential connections to about 750,000 across different parts of the country.

TTCL also said around 115,000 connections are already installed and in use. The company highlighted its use of GPON technology, which is a fibre networking method that shares one fibre line across many homes, like a high capacity water main feeding multiple houses. TTCL said GPON replaces older point-to-point setups that connect each customer with a dedicated line.

## Why It Matters
More active fibre connections usually mean better fixed broadband coverage for households, SMEs, and public services in Tanzania. That supports the “digital economy” goals the minister referenced, including online work, e-commerce, and digital government services.

For TTCL, the numbers are also a signal to the market. The operator is positioning Faiba Mlangoni Kwako and related home services, including smart home bundles, as mainstream connectivity products, not just niche upgrades for a few neighborhoods.
