## What Happened
Truecaller said any Nigerian can ask to be removed from its searchable caller ID database. The company says this is done through an unlisting tool, which is meant for people who do not have a Truecaller account.

Caller ID is the feature that shows a name attached to a phone number when a call comes in. Truecaller builds this directory using information it says is submitted by users, for example from phone contact lists and community reports.

The statement follows a Lagos State High Court ruling that dismissed a suit brought by a group acting for non-users. The applicants, including the Incorporated Trustees of the Data Privacy Lawyers Association, asked the court to declare that Truecaller’s collection, storage, and disclosure of non-users’ phone numbers violated privacy rights.

The case focused on consent, meaning permission to process personal data. In an earlier report on the dispute, the argument was that Truecaller’s consent basis did not cover phone contacts belonging to people who never signed up.

Truecaller said the court refused all the reliefs sought by the applicants. It also said caller identification and spam detection serve a public safety purpose by helping Nigerians avoid scams, fraud, and harassment.

This is another test of how Nigeria’s privacy framework applies to global consumer apps that process phone numbers and identity data at scale.
