## In Short
Trove says selected commercial papers are now available on its app from a ₦100,000 minimum investment.

## What Happened
[Trove](/trove) published a guide explaining commercial paper investing in Nigeria and said users can now invest in selected commercial papers from as low as ₦100,000.

In the post, Trove described commercial paper as a short term debt instrument issued by companies to raise money for business operations. It said buying a commercial paper is like lending money to an established company for a fixed period and earning a stated return.

Trove said commercial papers are typically unsecured, meaning they are not backed by collateral. Because of that, the post said they are usually issued by large, established, and creditworthy companies.

The guide also outlines how commercial paper works, including that companies issue the papers for a specific tenor, such as 30, 60, 90, or 180 days. Trove said investors may buy at a discount or at face value with a stated interest rate, and get repaid at maturity. It added that most commercial papers are issued at a discount to face value, though some are interest bearing.

Trove said there are two main types, promissory notes and drafts or bills of exchange. It added that, in practice, most commercial papers available to investors in Nigeria are promissory notes issued by corporates.

## Why It Matters
Trove’s main change is the minimum investment size. The post said commercial papers in Nigeria have traditionally had very high minimum investment amounts, often ₦5 million or more, which made them accessible mainly to institutional investors, high net worth individuals, and corporates.

By offering selected commercial papers from ₦100,000, Trove positions the product as more accessible to retail investors who want short term fixed income options.

The post also flags risk differences in plain terms. It compares commercial paper with treasury bills, stating that treasury bills are issued by the Federal Government of Nigeria and are described as very low risk, while commercial papers are issued by private companies and carry higher risk that depends on the company’s credit.
