## Content

## In Short
TikTok is facing a lawsuit in Nigeria after users in parts of northern Nigeria reported problems accessing the app. A digital rights group wants a Federal High Court in Abuja to rule on whether a regional restriction, if proven, breaches constitutional rights.

## What Happened
TikTok users in Kaduna, Kano, Kebbi and Sokoto states reportedly began experiencing disruptions around September 11, 2026. By September 14, some users said the app was heavily restricted or completely inaccessible.

On October 5, the Foundation for Digital Justice and Sustainable Development filed a fundamental rights case at the Federal High Court in Abuja. A fundamental rights case is a court action that argues a person’s basic rights, like freedom of expression, were violated.

The group is asking the court to determine whether the alleged restriction violates users’ rights to freedom of expression and freedom from discrimination. The key factual issue is causation, meaning whether TikTok itself restricted access or whether the disruption came from somewhere else, such as network routing problems, ISP filtering, or a wider connectivity failure.

The dispute is notable because it is not mainly about personal data. Recent Nigerian cases involving Meta and Truecaller focused on privacy and how companies handle user information. This TikTok case focuses on access, meaning whether people can use a major communications channel in their region.

## Why It Matters
TikTok is a major distribution channel for Nigerian creators and small businesses. For many users, it is also a marketing tool, a storefront, and a way to reach customers outside their immediate location.

If the court accepts jurisdiction and the claimant can show TikTok caused the restriction, the outcome could set a precedent. It would signal that Nigerian courts can hold global platforms accountable for regional service availability and possible discriminatory impacts.

For founders and operators, the bigger lesson is platform risk. When a single app becomes a key route to customers, any outage, suspension, or restriction can quickly become a business continuity problem.
