## Content

## In Short
- TikTok says it did not restrict access in parts of Northern Nigeria.
- Users in Kaduna, Kano, Kebbi, and Sokoto have reported weeks of connection issues.
- The cause is still unclear, and TikTok says it is engaging stakeholders.

## What Happened
TikTok says it did not implement restrictions affecting users in parts of Northern Nigeria. The statement follows reports that people in Kaduna, Kano, Kebbi, and Sokoto have struggled to access the short video app since mid-September.

Users have described common symptoms, videos not loading, feeds failing to refresh, and uploads stalling on regular mobile data. Some users say a VPN, a tool that reroutes your internet traffic through another location, helps restore access.

TikTok said it is “actively engaging with relevant stakeholders” to resolve the issue. The company did not name the stakeholders or explain what is causing the disruption.

The disruption has also drawn attention from civil society groups. A coalition of 12 organisations has asked Nigerian authorities and regulators to investigate and publish findings, including the Nigerian Communications Commission and the National Information Technology Development Agency.

## Why It Matters
For creators and small businesses, TikTok is not just entertainment. It is a distribution channel for marketing, customer support, and sales, especially for social commerce.

A prolonged outage also raises questions about how platform access issues happen in practice. Possible causes range from network routing problems, which is how traffic moves across telecom networks, to traffic management by operators, or a technical issue on the platform side.

For users, the VPN workaround can add cost, reduce speed, and create privacy risks if people rely on unknown VPN providers. For policymakers and telecom operators, the event adds pressure to clarify when outages are technical faults versus deliberate restrictions, and what transparency standards should apply.
