## What Happened: Tembo PSP Licence For Rwanda Payments
[Tembo](/tembo), a Tanzanian fintech, has secured a Payment Service Provider (PSP) licence in Rwanda. A PSP licence is regulatory approval to provide payment services, like processing transfers, collections, and merchant payments, under local rules.

Tembo said Rwanda’s regulatory approach and focus on digital transformation made it an attractive market. Co-founder Reuben Mwatosya said the company plans to support businesses operating across Rwanda, East Africa, and the wider continent with payment infrastructure.

With the licence, Tembo joins a crowded field of payment providers already active in Rwanda. These include [Paystack](/paystack) and [NALA](/nala), alongside local platforms like Irembo and regional players such as Tanzania’s Azampay.

## Why It Matters: Rwanda Fintech Regulation And Regional Expansion
For fintechs, licences are often the main bottleneck to entering new African markets. Approval as a PSP gives Tembo a clearer path to sign merchants, integrate with banks and payment rails, and sell compliance friendly products to businesses.

Rwanda is also a strategic base for regional payments. It is a small market, but it is known for relatively structured fintech regulation, and it sits within East Africa’s growing cross-border trade flows.

Competition will likely come down to reliability, pricing, and integrations. Merchants tend to pick providers that can handle local bank transfers, mobile money connections, and reconciliation tools, which are the back-office features that help a business match payments to orders.
