## In Short
- Telviva has launched Viva, a voice and text digital agent for South African businesses.
- The product is positioned as a step beyond basic chatbots, with smoother escalation to human agents.
- Telviva says Viva is built and hosted locally to make enterprise AI easier to adopt.

## What Happened
Telviva launched Viva, an intelligent digital agent designed for voice and text customer interactions. Telviva says the goal is to make enterprise-grade AI practical and affordable for companies in South Africa.

A digital agent is software that can understand everyday language and complete tasks across systems, not just follow a fixed script. Telviva CEO David Meintjes said many chatbots are rigid, which can lead to poor customer experiences. He said Viva is designed to be more dynamic, easier to manage, and better at handing off to a human when needed.

Telviva also positioned Viva as a way to connect customer conversations to “real business knowledge sources”. That means the agent can pull answers from internal documents, processes, or systems, so it can resolve more queries end to end. When the request is too complex or sensitive, the system is meant to transfer the interaction to a human agent without losing context.

The company also highlighted how Viva could change front-desk workflows. Instead of receptionists spending most of their time routing calls and handling repeat questions, Telviva wants them to act as “human in the loop”, focusing on complex conversations and on quality control for the agent’s responses.

Telviva said its Digital Agent offering will roll out in four tiers, so businesses can start with basic call routing or static knowledge bases and scale up over time.

## Why It Matters
South African companies are under pressure to adopt AI without breaking existing customer support and contact centre operations. A locally hosted digital agent may appeal to firms that want predictable performance, local support, and clearer control over where data is processed.

If Viva delivers on smoother human handoff and better knowledge integration, it could reduce support workloads while keeping service quality. For operators, the bigger question will be implementation effort, how well it connects to internal systems, and whether “human when you need it” holds up at peak volumes.
