## In Short
- Telecom Egypt won Ookla’s “Fastest Fixed Network in North Africa” award for Q1 and Q2 2026.
- The award is based on Speedtest results from real user tests on fixed broadband.
- The operator says it will keep investing in fibre-to-the-home and capacity upgrades through 2030.

## What Happened
Telecom Egypt, also known as [WE](/we), has won Ookla’s award for the “Fastest Fixed Network in North Africa” for the first and second quarters of 2026.

Ookla is the company behind Speedtest, a widely used app that measures internet speed. The award is based on an analysis of user-initiated Speedtest measurements, which means results come from real customers running tests, not lab benchmarks.

The award was presented during Network X 2026, a telecom networks conference held in Vienna from October 13 to 15. Ookla CEO Chip Strange handed the award to Telecom Egypt Managing Director and CEO Tamer El Mahdi.

Telecom Egypt linked the win to its ongoing upgrades to Egypt’s fixed broadband network. The company highlighted a 2026 to 2030 investment plan focused on moving users off older copper lines and onto fibre-to-the-home, also called FTTH, which is a direct fibre connection to a home or office.

## Why It Matters
Fixed broadband quality is a core input for Egypt’s digital economy, especially for cloud services, online work, and software-heavy SMEs.

Fibre upgrades usually improve three things at once, higher speeds, better reliability, and more network capacity during peak hours.

Telecom Egypt also positioned the investment as “AI-ready” infrastructure. In simple terms, AI tools often need faster uploads and downloads to move large datasets and access cloud computing.

For operators across North Africa, Ookla awards are also a signal to investors and enterprise buyers. They can influence procurement decisions for connectivity, data links, and managed network services.
