## What Happened
Telecel Ghana has increased its capital investment by 60% over the 2023–2026 period, compared with the previous four years, according to Ghana’s Ministry of Communications, Digital Technology and Innovations.

The company’s capex, meaning long-term spending on infrastructure like cell towers and site equipment, rose from about US$893 million to about US$1.4 billion to US$1.5 billion.

The minister said Telecel is targeting upgrades at 2,698 sites in 2026. About 1,890 sites have already been upgraded and made 4G-compliant, meaning they can deliver 4G LTE service where backhaul and spectrum allow.

The broader government effort includes mapping “no service” and weak coverage areas with Members of Parliament. The ministry said it is working with the National Communications Authority (NCA) and network operators to improve coverage, capacity, and quality.

The same update also highlighted MTN Ghana plans, including a three-year commitment of more than US$1.1 billion and plans to build 800 new cell sites in 2026. MTN’s rollout includes 5G, which is faster mobile broadband that can also support lower latency, meaning less delay for apps like video calls and real-time payments.

Better mobile network coverage improves reliability for everyday services like mobile money, e-commerce, and business communications. It also reduces the digital divide between urban centres and underserved communities.

The ministry also flagged three ongoing issues that can still cause dropped calls and slow data, frequent fibre cuts, national grid power instability, and subscriber growth outpacing network expansion.

For startups and operators in Ghana, the key signal is that telcos are planning heavier site upgrades and new builds. That should help improve 4G availability now, while setting the stage for wider 5G access once spectrum assignment and deployments progress.
