## In Short
- Mastercard and TeamApt announced a strategic collaboration on August 14, 2026.
- The focus is wider Mastercard payment acceptance for merchants across Africa.
- No funding or equity investment was disclosed.

## What Happened
TeamApt and Mastercard have agreed to work together to expand digital payment acceptance across Africa. TeamApt is a payments infrastructure provider and it operates as part of the Moniepoint group.

Under the collaboration, [TeamApt Limited](/teamapt-limited) will connect directly to Mastercard’s global payments network as a non-bank acquirer. An acquirer is the company that signs up merchants to accept card payments and routes those transactions for processing.

This setup should help TeamApt onboard more licensed businesses and financial institutions. It also expands the infrastructure that lets merchants accept Mastercard payments in-store, online, and on mobile.

The companies said the integration will link TeamApt’s switching infrastructure with Mastercard’s network. A switch is the routing layer that moves payment transactions between banks, wallets, and payment channels, similar to a traffic controller for money transfers.

## Why It Matters
For African merchants, the biggest issue is often not demand, it is reliable acceptance across channels. When card acceptance is inconsistent, businesses lose sales, and customers fall back to cash or bank transfers.

Mastercard pointed to Nigeria’s large SME base, with over 40 million micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises. Mastercard’s 2026 SME Confidence Index also suggests small businesses see digital tools as important for growth, so expanding acceptance and processing capacity can have a direct impact.

If the integration delivers higher uptime and smoother onboarding, it could also support downstream services like access to credit. Many lenders rely on payment history and transaction volumes to assess small business risk.

For the broader ecosystem, the partnership is another sign that global card networks are leaning on local payment infrastructure players to scale distribution, compliance, and merchant reach across African markets.
