## Content

## In Short
- SureStart Online says an eight-person team has provided insurance cover to more than 300,000 unique beneficiaries in South Africa.
- The company credits embedded insurance, customer support changes like WhatsApp, and digital claims for scaling without adding headcount.
- It also frames digital distribution as a path to financial inclusion for low-premium customers.

## What Happened
[SureStart Online](/surestart-online), an authorised financial services provider and digital insurance brokerage, says it has covered more than 300,000 beneficiaries across South Africa. The company also says it has paid out thousands of claims worth several million rand.

On scaling, the firm argues that most insurance distribution grows by hiring more brokers and support staff. SureStart says it aimed to “scale with technology, not seats”, and focused on embedded insurance. Embedded insurance means the cover is offered inside another product or app, often at checkout, instead of being sold separately.

SureStart says it embeds insurance via API, which is a software connector that lets two systems talk to each other. In practice, that lets a partner platform offer insurance at the moment a customer is already buying something.

The company also says it is trying to go beyond the standard Treating Customers Fairly approach by adopting its own “Treating Customers Excellently” principles. It used quality monitoring to spot customer friction, then added WhatsApp support and digital claims, so customers do not need printers and paper forms. It says it is working toward “cover and claims in a click” using AI agents, which are automated assistants that can handle common service tasks.

## Why It Matters
For insurers and brokers, customer acquisition is often expensive, and small monthly premiums can be hard to serve profitably. SureStart’s model points to a different route, use distribution partnerships and software integrations to lower acquisition costs.

For consumers, especially informal workers and micro business owners, digital distribution can remove barriers like branch visits, paperwork, and minimum premium levels. If embedded insurance becomes more common, it could expand access to basic cover for people who are currently uninsured.

For the wider insurtech market, the message is that operations and customer support tooling can be as important as the product itself, particularly when claims and service volumes grow.
