## What Happened
[SunFi](/sunfi) says it is participating in EWAS, a three-year programme that supports clean energy access for women and youth working in agri-food systems in Nigeria and Ethiopia. In Lagos, the company is targeting women entrepreneurs whose income depends on keeping food cold, like frozen fish, meat, and other temperature-sensitive goods.

EWAS is led by Rocky Mountain Institute and backed by the Global Energy Alliance for People and Planet, with support from the Mastercard Foundation. The programme’s stated goals include expanding access to clean energy, combining training and financing, and enabling 17,000 jobs, with an emphasis on young women.

SunFi’s role is to deliver what it calls productive-use solar, meaning solar power that directly runs business equipment like freezers, not just lights and phone charging. One example is the “Aisha Mega” bundle designed for higher refrigeration demand. SunFi describes it as a 3kVA solar system paired with a 2.56kWh battery, 2.36kWp solar panels, and a 200L energy-efficient freezer.

Eligibility requirements shared by SunFi include being a woman aged 35 or below, having a verifiable business location, and holding a valid BVN, Nigeria’s bank verification number. Payment plans may be structured daily, weekly, or monthly, depending on the programme’s terms.

## Why It Matters
Cold chain reliability is a hidden cost center for small food businesses. When grid power fails, traders often switch to petrol or diesel generators, which raises operating costs and can still lead to spoilage.

If EWAS financing makes solar and efficient freezers easier to afford, it could reduce fuel spend, protect inventory, and stabilise daily sales for Lagos traders. It also shows how energy access, asset financing, and small business growth are increasingly linked in Nigeria’s informal and SME economy.
